“Memories. The faculty by which sensations, impressions, and ideas are stored and recalled."
Setting:
- EIDOS' city is bright and very artificial— composed of mostly digital television screens and projectors. There are entire walls of television screens and projectors, each of which plays short clips and movie trailers non-stop. In buildings, there are often projections of sunny days (even if it’s raining outside), and in aquariums there are whole walls composed of looping clips from the memories of scuba divers (see “BACKGROUND”). At the malls/shopping centers, there are massive runways set at the center for advertisement.
- The culture revolves around mass media. Movies, and cinema, especially! WATCH MOVIES WATCH MOVIES WATCH MOVIES. It’s pretty much engrained in the very fabric of society.
- Music is also seen as very important. Most of the music is highly processed (Asian) pop/techno/hiphop. Like this and this and this. At the end of each year, the "top hits" are composed and rehashed into an epic year mix and played on loop until New Years!
- The actual soundtrack that plays throughout the series, however, is Nujabes, Epik High, and Clazziquai (check out the soundtrack!)
- All celebrities (actors, musicians, etc) are manufactured. Companies/sponsors basically Frankenstein parts together to form fictional people. “Marriages”/”relationships” occur when companies bond together. “Divorces” occur when deals fall though!
- People dress really urban/street! *___* Kingkolea brand is most popular.
- Plastic surgery is very common, and relatively cheap. It's not at all a taboo as it is in our uni, so nobody bats an eye if someone turns up at work with new nose each week.
- In the context of this world, a person’s memories is similar to that of a USB harddrive.
- Memories can be easily copied (common), sold (common), bought (common), and deleted (rare and expensive and subject to heavy background check) to from and by a government-funded/regulated company known as EIDOS--which takes root from EIDETIC and Greek "EIDOS" which means "seen". EIDOS that takes said memories and turns them into film reels/movies (with editing and mashing of other memories, of course). The company collects both bad and good memories; the more dramatic the memories, the more they’re willing to pay up to buy a copy from you to make into films, or archive for future film ideas.
- Great adventurers and all that are especially sought out for their memories.
- The kinds of memories EIDOS sells back are primarily good. Those memories are sometimes completely artificial, and sometimes they are copies from real memories (the latter being more expensive). All memories sold by EIDOS are marked by small, cigarette-like burns (LIKE IN A MOVIE REEL), which differentiate a person's real memories from the ones they purchased from EIDOS.
- There are also memory deletion services in which the individual can have certain memories completely taken away from them. These cases are much more rare, and the process is much more expensive. This is due to a case— THE WHITE CASE in which a certain man only known to the public as Mr. White held a small girl hostage for over 10 years through intense and unwilling memory manipulation/deletion. His arrest caused great outcry for reform, so background checks are super extensive if you want to delete memories.
- The owner of EIDOS is known as the Producer, those below him the Directors. Those that deal with the editing of memories are known as Editors. Those that create memories are Filmmakers.
- EIN LEIERMANN aged 23 university student somehow gets his hands on a bunch of bad memories and begins inserting them into unsuspecting victims. He then watches them (from afar) descend into insanity/depression, or ruin their own lives or turn themselves into the police etc.
- If they kill themselves, he usually takes away their memories for his evergrowing stash. In other words, he’s a terrorist! The police force catch onto what is going on and are on the look out for this terrorist. Being a devious basterd however…. They don’t know who, or what he is…! WILL THEY CATCH HIM WHO KNOWSSS.
- HEH HEH I LOVE EIDOS IT IS A BABBY OF MINE. ANYWAYS.
- I imagine most of my universes set-up sort of like multi-seasoned animes! With EIDOS, I imagine the set up to be especially similar to Satoshi Kon's Paranoia Agent wherein the episodes focus in and out on different characters throughout the city, and how they deal with the world/their memories, and Ein! The overreaching plot of EIDOS is to CATCH EIN, though Ein does not appear in every episode (sort of like how Little Slugger doesn't appear in every episode). YEAH!
